Electron tunneling through a monolayer of small metal clusters investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

چکیده

We have investigated the current-voltage characteristic of monolayers of seperated metal clusters of a size of 1.4 nm with a low-temperature ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope. Apart from the usual charge-quantization phenomena, such as Coulomb blockade and staircase, negative differential resistance was observed by performing measurements at distinct locations on the cluster layers. The latter phenomenon can be understood by a “leakage” current to a neighboring cluster and a nonclassical behavior of the nanojunction capacitances caused by electron tunneling.

Size-dependent changes in the electronic structure of metal clusters as investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy

Pd, Ag, Cd and Au clusters of varying sizes have been investigated by scanning tunneling spectroscopy under ultra-high vacuum. The conductance of the clusters decreases markedly when the cluster diameter is F1 nm. A plot of the density of 3 Ž . states at the Fermi level against the cluster volume varies nearly linearly up to a cluster volume of 4 nm diameter ;2 nm . Below a cluster diameter of ...

Distance-dependent electron hopping conductivity and nanoscale lithography of chemically-linked gold monolayer protected cluster films

Films of monolayer protected Au clusters (MPCs) with mixed alkanethiolate and -carboxylate alkanethiolate monolayers, linked together by carboxylate–Cu2+–carboxylate bridges, exhibit average edge-to-edge cluster spacings that vary with the numbers of methylene segments in the alkanethiolate ligand as determined by a combined atomic force microscopy (AFM)/UV-Vis spectroscopy method. The electron...

Imaging ultrathin Al2O3 ®lms with scanning tunneling microscopy

Reproducible scanning tunneling microscopic (STM) images were obtained from ultrathin Al2O3 ®lms epitaxially grown on Re…0001†. Initially, the oxide ®lms grow two-dimensionally in a layer-by-layer fashion with well-ordered surface morphologies. As the oxide ®lm thickens to ca. 9 monolayer equivalents (MLE), the surface roughens and becomes more disordered yet still exhibits signi®cant long-rang...

Effect of the strong metal-support interaction on hydrogen sorption kinetics of Pd-capped switchable mirrors

The morphology and electronic structure of Pd clusters grown on oxidized yttrium surfaces are investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. The hydrogen sorption mediated by the Pd clusters is determined from the optically monitored switching kinetics of the underlying yttrium film. A strong thickness dependence of the hydrogen uptake is found. The el...

Asymmetry of electron transmission through monolayers of helical polyalanine adsorbed on gold surfaces.

Polyalanine derivatives containing cysteamine linker R-(Ala)14NH-(CH2)2-SH, where R is ferrocenecarbonyl or hydrogen, were synthesized and then used to form self-assembled monolayers on gold. The tilt angles and the packing density of the molecules within monolayer assemblies were determined by FTIR spectroscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy, respectively. Electrochemical properties of mono...
